Philippians 4:1–9 (NLT)
This passage is one of the most comforting in Scripture because Paul acknowledged something we all experience–anxiety. He didn’t shame us for it, but he did invite us to a different way of responding.
Paul called us to pray about everything, to replace worry with honest conversation with God. He encouraged us to practice gratitude—not forced positivity, but intentional remembrance of God’s goodness. Paul told us to make every effort to keep ourselves united in the Spirit, binding ourselves together with peace.
As we do this, God’s peace becomes a guard over our hearts and minds. Paul then shifted our attention to the power of our thought life. What we think about shapes our lives. Filling our minds with what is true, honorable, right, pure, and lovely forms a foundation where joy and peace can grow.
We have to fix our eyes on the things of Jesus—choosing to take our negative thoughts captive and focus on the truth of the Lord. We can choose to consume negative media, or stop doomscrolling and pursue real-life interactions with our friends. We have a choice to reorient ourselves around things that are life-bringing instead of joy-killing.
Reflection Questions:
What thoughts have I been dwelling on that are pulling me away from peace?
What anxieties or worries do I need to bring to God today?
How can gratitude reshape the way I think and respond?
