Philippians 1:27–2:4 (NLT)

Joy was never meant to be carried alone, especially as followers of Jesus.

Paul calls the church to unity—not uniformity, but shared purpose—and by doing that, shared joy.

Happiness usually involves a victory for the self, but joy transcends self. When we live for ourselves, joy shrinks. When we live for something bigger, joy expands.

Paul invites the church to look not only to their own interests, but also to the interests of others. That kind of heart posture creates environments where joy can actually thrive. We can cultivate that same sense of unity in our own lives.

For example, you can choose to take a step back in a disagreement because winning is just not worth it. Maybe you bring a small gift to a coworker to let them know you care. You can dedicate your time to serving your local church or outreach ministry. All of these examples are ways we can cultivate a culture of unity.

Joy flourishes when we stop fighting each other and start fighting for each other.
